John Aycliffe and his soldiers are on "high alert" to find Crispin and Bear.
Cedric betrayed Crispin by revealing Crispin's identity as the son of a nobleman, which put him at risk. Despite their earlier camaraderie, Cedric's actions were driven by self-interest and fear of the repercussions of harboring a fugitive. This betrayal ultimately led to significant consequences for Crispin, as it compromised his safety and freedom.
At the end of the book, Crispin shows courage by confronting Aycliffe, his former master, to seek justice for the injustices he suffered. Despite his fear, Crispin stands up for himself and refuses to let Aycliffe continue to control his life. In doing so, Crispin demonstrates bravery and determination to live a free and honorable life.

Lady Furnival is afraid that Lord Douglas will discover Crispin's true identity because it could jeopardize her family's reputation and safety. Crispin, being the illegitimate son of Lord Furnival, poses a risk to the family's social standing, and any revelation could lead to scandal or political repercussions. Additionally, she fears for Crispin's life, as Lord Douglas may see him as a threat or a rival. This fear drives her to protect both her son and her family's interests.
Unfortunately, wether they know it or not, it is because of fear. Not fearful of you physically but fear of all the emotions that might come out of them. Fear can cause many, many problems and unfortunately sons and daughters get trapped by their fear.
The first dead man, who Crispin believes is his father, fills him with grief and a sense of loss. The second dead man, who is the steward who falsely accused him, brings a mix of relief and fear as it confirms his suspicions about the corruption in the village.
