Caroline Bingley would be hostile, and possibly vengeful. Darcy was the object of many other women, either for themselves or for some close relative, but he chose her.

When Elizabeth objects, he is understandably upset. But he writes a letter that makes her understand she was wrong about at least part of what she believed about him.

Her visit to Pemberley begins to change her view of Darcy. This is not because it provides evidence of his wealth, but because it shows his good taste in how the house and grounds are kept, his charity and kindness toward his tenants and servants, and his love of his sister. Meeting Georgiana, Elizabeth begins to understand that what she had thought was pride or arrogance was more likely to be the effect of shyness. She begins to understand she had been wrong about the part of this very attractive man that she though was repulsive.

Finally, she learns that Darcy has gone to the effort of finding Wickham and Lydia so they could be properly married. She realizes that this is not just a matter of spending time and money, but of dealing face to face with a person he has every reason to loath, but in a way beneficial to that person. She knows that he did this for her. She also comes to realize that Darcy has worked to reunite Bingley with Jane.

So in the end, Elizabeth can only see him as a handsome, wealthy, intelligent, much sought after man, who dances well, is able to address his own mistakes honestly, has good taste, is kind and generous, and is willing to go to a great deal of trouble on her behalf.
