Akin to the giant sandworms of Arrakus. The prairie whale has become extremely endangered and those that remain are well versed in camouflage. Specialists can track them but the breeding population has been reduced to dangerously low levels due to over hunting by unscrupulous whalers and wheat farmers. The prairie whale has survived by nibbling the delicate flowers of the sorghum plant which has for unknown reasons caused their blubber to take on a delicate hue not unlike a field of sunflowers. This has the beneficial side effect of providing camouflage however the farmers tending the fields often run into them with large tractors, further reducing the population and angering insurance companies.
