Timothy tried to make Phillip independent in "The Cay" because he wanted Phillip to learn valuable life skills, become self-reliant, and be able to survive on his own in case Timothy was not around to take care of him. Timothy wanted Phillip to be able to face challenges and adversity with confidence and resilience.
Phillip is interested in Timothy because he admires his survival skills, deep knowledge of the sea, and resourcefulness. Timothy's guidance and care during their struggle to survive on the island also form a strong bond between them.
Phillip got rescued at the end of the book because, he had a fire and there was a helicopter or plane and the helicopter or plane saw the smoke from the fire, so they sent a boat to the cay and he got rescued. I don't know who wrote that dumb answer before but here is the correct one. From, Leah
