Why is the knight first in General prologue and first to tell a tale?

It is true that they drew cuts, but that was simply a plot devise. The real reason the Knight's tale comes first is because his position reflects his status in this class conscious society.

They all draw 'cuts', something like drawing straws, and whoever drew the shortest one had to tell the first story. The knight drew the shortest 'cut' and so his story was first
