National character studies were undertaken to understand how the culture and personalities of nations, as living entities, affected their relationships with each other, especially in the context of war. Objections to this field of study included the ideas that nations take on a different identity during times of war; that conclusions drawn from the analysis of a nation were at the mercy of the investigator in relation to their proximity to the nation; and that the nation could not be categorized as a whole, but only based on the people and societies who make up the nation.
