Actually, it wasn't. Charlotte Doyle became a member of the crew and eventually was assigned to the "forecastle", i.e., the crew's living quarters. The forecastle, or "fo'c's'le" is the foremost upper (or outside) deck of a ship. It used to also mean the crews quarters closest to the bow, but that is now generally referred to as the Forward Mess Deck.
