There is a philosophy as relates to leadership: Leaders should be respected or feared. When the leader cannot earn the first, the latter will do.
Leadership is a grave responsibility, and the first element of that responsibility is to address the needs of those you lead. It is by this effort that respect is earned. Some who are lead do not understand this, however, and expect more than they deserve of the leader can give. In instances such as these, the leader is obligated to educate those who are lead to the consequences of asking too much or pushing too hard.

That's a personal question with different answers. It's really my opinion, but i think you should tell that person you liked him/her if you were good friends and/or get along together well.
