Upon his death in 1897, George M. Pullman bequeathed $1.3 million for the creation of the Pullman Free School of Manual Training to be established in the Town of Pullman, which by then had become part of the City of Chicago. By its very name, it could not charge tuition, and was built for the benefit of the sons and daughters of the Pullman Company and the residents of nearby Roseland community. In 1949, the school closed and its endowment was converted to an educational foundation -- The George M. Pullman Educational Foundation, which to this day provides need-based, merit-based scholarships to students in Cook County, IL for college. Since the first scholarship was awarded in 1950, the Pullman Foundation has awarded over $30 million to approximately 12,000 Cook County students.
