As a corn farmer, Orville Reddenbacher hybridized a strain of popping corn that made consistently larger popcorn puffs from each kernel.

Having little success promoting the new strain of corn to farmers (who saw little if no benefit of growing it and paying a premium for the seeds), Orville set out to educate the public as to the benefits and thereby create a market for it. All of his ads promoted the "bigger pop".

An Ad agency determined that his unusual name would create brand recognition among customers. He went retail and never looked back.
