Knowing whether you are right or wrong is typically based on knowledge, and knowledge gets its foundation from facts. Therefore, facts are key to determining something as right or wrong. There are right and wrong things that each society teaches its people, but these are preferences ("it is wrong to have more than one child" is not supported in many societies, but it is right in at least one). Facts/Knowledge The Sun rises from the East and sets again in the West is a fact. If you have a photograph of the sun just touching the sea and the Los Angeles downtown area was in the foreground (you are looking west), but you put a caption on that photo as "California Sunrise", you would be wrong. Opinions/Preferences You can also be right or wrong regarding your own preferences or opinions. As an example, "So-n-So music is the best" would be an opinion and preference on your part. You might be right, for you, but others may not be as convinced. Political Party A is much better than Political Party B would be an opinion, unless there are statistics (facts) to show that Political Party B continually causes more damage to a society, or consistently fails to complete tasks it has promised to accomplish. Deciding right from wrong is not an easy task, when it is not solely based on facts ("5 + 4 = 8" is wrong, and that is a fact).
