In the mid-1920s, a significant portion of American stock was purchased by individual investors and speculators, fueled by optimism and the rise of the stock market. This period saw a surge in stock market participation, often referred to as "the Great Bull Market." Many investors were engaging in purchasing stocks on margin, borrowing money to buy more shares, which contributed to the market's rapid rise and eventual crash in 1929.

i don't know you tell me..?
Tom achieves wealth and high social status in West Egg. Although he achieves wealth, he is an immoral character. Before the 1920s, Benjamin Franklin started the idea that the American Dream was the pursuit of moral perfection. Once technology took over America beginning in the 1920s, the idea of the American Dream was 'rags-riches' (poor to wealthy) because people became greedy. People focused less on morality and focused more on materialism. So in reality, I'd actually say Tom represents the corruption (or decline) of the American Dream.
It represents corruption in 1920s America, how wealth is rarely pure, and how the American Dream is now distorted and a mere facade.
the American Dream
The failure of the American Dream in "The Great Gatsby" highlights the disillusionment and emptiness that can result from pursuing wealth and status at the expense of moral values and genuine happiness. The characters in the novel, particularly Gatsby himself, strive for the American Dream of success and prosperity but ultimately find themselves unfulfilled and trapped in a cycle of materialism and superficiality. This failure serves as a critique of the shallow and corrupt nature of the American Dream in the 1920s.
Both "Of Mice and Men" and "The Great Gatsby" depict characters striving for the American Dream in the 1920s. In both novels, characters pursue wealth, success, and upward mobility in pursuit of happiness. However, both novels also highlight the emptiness and disillusionment that can come with the pursuit of the American Dream.

what does the American dream have to do with of mice and men
The concept of the American Dream has evolved since Gatsby's time in the 1920s. While the idea of achieving success and prosperity through hard work and determination remains a key element, contemporary interpretations may also emphasize notions of equality, justice, and fulfillment beyond material wealth. Additionally, societal changes, economic conditions, and cultural shifts have influenced how individuals perceive and pursue the American Dream today.
