I'm not sure about "Illegal" but it IS morally and ethically WRONG. If you cash a check that you know is mistakenly doubled then I would say that you have stolen something that doesn't belong to you. You would have taken advantage of someone else's oversight. You would no longer be my friend.

obviously he/she doesn't care about ethics and morals, so no it's not illegal, but if you know it was an accident and you plan on doing business with whomever wrote it then i would show he/she what they did wrong and you'll be in their good graces. plus you might even get a reward or something for being honest. I've been in the same situation before doing landscaping work for an elderly lady, but i didn't get anything in return but i continued working for her for almost 2 years after that and i got to sleep at night =)
