Banks and many retailers will accept the US dollar but they will charge extra for exchange to make it worth their while.
Take local currency if you can, get cash from ATMs (Get large $ amounts to reduce fees) while there or use your Credit card and Bank Card to reduce exchange and service fees.
My credit card gives me about the best deal on exchange and fees except for buying forign currency from my local branch, and they generally wont sell me more than $1000. at a time.
