1900's is a pretty broad range in terms of the role of males and the idea of male 'dominance' in society. For something like the early 1900's though, much of the work required and the jobs available at the time required more manual labour rather than pure skills in a certain field, as the industrial age was really still taking shape and form in many countries and creating these types of jobs.

So basically in early 1900's it was the men who went out and did the hard work, while the women stayed home and did the knitting, cooking and the washing - a common stereotype even nowadays, but one that certainly applied to most, if not all women living in that age. Of course, as the decades went by this changed as women rights were integrated into the system, but back then males were really seen as the head of society - the females being the people on the side that took care of the mundane tasks.

What were the roles of women and men in the 1900s?

In the 1900s, gender roles were largely defined by traditional norms, with men typically serving as breadwinners and heads of households, engaged in public life and formal employment. Women, on the other hand, were often relegated to domestic roles, focused on homemaking, child-rearing, and supporting their husbands. However, as the century progressed, especially during and after the World Wars, women began to enter the workforce in greater numbers, challenging these traditional roles and advocating for rights and equality. This shift laid the groundwork for the feminist movements in the latter half of the century.
