There isn't much you can do, besides pay it. According to most credit card contracts, interest will still accummlate, even if it has been turned over a collector. You can send the collector a dispute letter my certified mail, demanding proof that you owe it, and you can tell them NOT to call you anymore, however this will not relieve you the responsiblity for paying it. You can also offer them a settlement. Let's say you owe them 1,000 dollars. I would decide how much you can pay in one lump sum, which let's say 600 bucks. Always start on the low end, like about 300 hundred or so. Usually they will settle for about 40 -50% of the total balance, so you maybe able to get buy with about 400-500 hundred, but always start out low. If they agree to it, be sure to get it in writing that the debt will be settled, and hold on to that document for 10 years or so, just in case.

You have to pay the collection agency. The original company has a signed contract with the collection agency and they pay the collection agency a % of what they collect from you. That's how they make their $$. The original company did not want to have the outstanding balance on their books.

Collection agencies can't add charges. Fees and interest charged to your account are per the terms of your contract with the creditor.

Can collection agencies take you to the court?

Absolutely they can ! The only reason a person needs to deal with a collection agency, is because they defaulted on payments to the original company. That company passed the account to a debt-recovery agency, who paid the sum YOU owe to the original company. If you simply refuse to pay the collection agency, they have the legal right to take you to court to recover the debt !
