It is very difficult to implement organisational change without a climate of trust in the organisation. If you are seen as someone who leads actively then other employees are more likely to trust you to do the right thing by them. In today's flatter organisation trust and cooperative attitudes are important if people are to take empowerment seriously. They must be able to trust others to share resources and to provide assistance and support when required.

Employees must have faith in management to make decisions that give them a range of work opportunities. They must trust that managers have the goals of the work group as their major concern rather than agendas which only further their own careers. A climate of trust will encourage people to align their personal interests with the interests of the organisation.

To build trust you can:

-tell people how you feel

-let people know what you know about the organisation

-keep confidential information to yourself

-be perceived as working for the organisation's interests rather than your own

-stand up for the rights of others

-act in a reliable and dependable manner

-keep promises

-disclose information about yourself

-cooperate with others

-behave consistently

-express warmth and acceptance
