The Northwest natives ate a variety of different types of food. There were hundreds of different groups that lived along the coast of what is now Washington and Oregon and these populations survived on diets that were made up of mostly fish. Fish was also a necessity along the Columbia and Snake rivers. Farther inland dear and small game gave the populations their protein, but it is important to realize that all of the natives also were farmers and gatherers. They had a variety of different crops and collected a number of different types of berries, roots and other edible items.
