A "sought-after invitation" is an invitation to an important event that many people would like to attend but very few will be able to.

For example: an invitation to a White House Dinner would be a sought after invitation, as would an invitation to a film premiere in Cannes.

I have yet to get an invitation to either, but I sure would like one!

When an invitation says for what does that mean?

I was looking for an answer to this question as well. I checked many websites and I think "for" means what the invitation is for (Chelsea's 3rd Birthday, Colleen's Baby Shower, ect.), as apposed to who the invitation is written to.
