In my job (speech-language pathologist/public schools) I need to earn six graduate credits every 5 years to stay employed and keep my license with the Wiconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) current. In the last 3-4 years, DPI has offered an alternative to these graduate credits. Employees can now develop a professional action plan instead. Basically it means that employees can develop a research question related to their work and under the guidance of someone who has been trained by DPI to review professional action plans, do what ever is needed to answer the research question. The PAP is much less expensive than paying for graduate credits and it allows employees to put time and effot into something that truly interests them. It also allows busy professionals to work at their pace on their own schedule. I've also heard of employees writing PAPs as a part of a yearly job performance evaluation. In this case, the PAP is the employee's plan for addressing areas of weakness found in the evaluation through self-reflection and/or supervisor input. It involves setting goals and mapping out strategies for meeting them in the work place.
