What can you do to stop your brother from continuing to use your deceased father's credit cards?

It depends on whther or not your brother is an authorized user. In which case the company would come after him for the money. I will assume, for the moment that he isn't. In most states this is considered fraudulent use of a credit card and a criminal as well as civil offense. I don't understand why this was not cleared up in Probate, or by whomever handled your granmother' affairs after her death. You can call or write the credit card company and inform them of the situation. They might ask for a death certificate to close the account. There are other options such as contacting the Elder Abuse organization in your area who should refer you to someone who can give you legal assistance. Please feel free to email me if I can help you further.

Why don't people pay their debts?

The majority don't pay because they can't. Many people have poor money management skills. Others unexpectedly lose their source of income. Still others run into a person situation that incurs massive expenses, like a surgery that isn't covered by insurance, elder care for parents, funeral expenses, etc. Very few people (perhaps 1 or 2 percent) open credit accounts without the intention of paying them back.

What are some of the pitfalls of reverse mortgage?

The biggest pitfall of the reverse mortgage is that it is one of the more expensive credit options available. Because these loans are aimed at the elderly, other pitfalls maybe that an elder may need to move to assisted living and will still have a mortgage to pay, if the loan owner is unable to stay in the home all other family members must leave the house as per the mortgage rules, and if a reverse mortgage owner(s) dies the loan is still due.
