My Great Uncle , Tom Broyhill, was Founder of Lenoir Furniture Corp. around 1905. It produced dining-room furniture upper mid-price range till 1942 when my Grandfather, JE, consolidated the factory in to his holdings under the name Broyhill Furniture Factories. In 1972 the company name was changed to Broyhill Furniture Industries.

I worked a summer or two there in 1974-75 in shipping department. One thousand employees in assembly-line fashion. Work was hot, fast, and furious; smell of sawdust, glue, and lacquer; sound of saws, heavy machinery, forklifts, creaking T Bar conveyors stretching over a mile up and down corridors in to a cavern dark warehouse packed to the ceiling on several floors; wood floors and walls bowed 5 feet in sections from the tonnage of weight; Baseball capped factory foremen and managers hustling at every minute of the day keeping the production moving; Let me repeat it was Hot 85-100 degrees during the summer; no such thing as air conditioning. Everyone was happy, proud, motivated . Old wood building probably built on 50 times to 500,000 sq ft approx. Broyhill sold in 1979 and over last 10 years most all Broyhill factories closed and production moved to China. Lenoir Furniture Corporation factory was mothballed and rusted empty for years. Owner, Furniture Brands, finally tore facility down leaving a mound of steel covering many acres until the land was cleared 2012. 100 years plus history and 4 generations gone.

What is the differences between sole proprietorship patnership and corporation?

* A sole proprietorship is a business consisting of one owner. That owner may be either an individual or a corporation. If the owner is an individual (who is also personally liable for all the debts of the business) and carries on business under a name other than his or her personal name, that name must be registered under The Business Names Registration Act. * A partnership is a business owned by one or more individuals or corporations (in any combination). Within a partnership, each partner is potentially liable for all debts of the partnership. If the partnership carries on business under a name, that name must be registered under The Business Names Registration Act. * A corporation is a legal entity that has a separate legal existence apart from its shareholders and directors. It is sometimes also referred to as a 'limited company'. Since it has a separate legal existence from its shareholders and directors, they are generally not personally liable for the debts of the corporation beyond the amount contributed. Although it is the shareholders which 'own' a corporation, it is the directors who manage the day-to-day operations.
