Luther Simjian patented an early, but highly unsuccessful prototype of the ATM in 1939. It was tested at the time, and it was determined that there was little use for such a device; therefore it was discontinued.

The first modern ATM was installed in 1967 in a Barclay's Bank in London. The inventor was John Shepherd Barron. Later that year, six of these were installed at banks in Philadelphia.
