Charge accounts became popular in the early 20th century. The first 'credit' card issued a Diners Club [because most of the clientele were traveling salesman] in 1950 to about 200 people. This allowed salesman to use the card, while traveling, at different locations. The money was made by the companies that accepted the credit card was charged 7% for each transaction and subscribers were charged a $3 annual fee that begun in 1951.
