There are many theories on the topic. Some claim that the memory of a goldfish is only 3 seconds, some one month, and some as long as three months.
The notion that goldfish have a memory of only 3 seconds is thought by some to be a myth, developed by pet shop owners to convince buyers that the small fish tank environment was not cruel treatment of their pet. Others claim that goldfish have been placed in mazes and have shown to remember only 3 seconds of the maze, thus the 3 second memory theory.
The first fundamental problem is that we cannot differentiate a goldfish's memory from it's indifference, or it's ability to swim through mazes. Unlike other domesticated animals, goldfish will swim to the glass of the tank no matter who comes to it; owner or feline.
If you have ever had a fish tank, your goldfish will recognize movement outside the tank in association with their food source. This memory certainly lasts longer than 3 seconds. I don't recommend this test for seeing how long this memory lasts - the results may be fatal to the goldfish.
THE TRUTH IS A GoldFishs memory is 3 months longa long time ago some person made up a myth that golfishs memory were 3 secondsbut then a few scientists figured out that it was 3 months!!varying from 2 seconds to 12 seconds depending on what type it is basically not very longWRONG.Goldfish are actually more intelligent than we give them credit for. Mythbusters proved this by teaching them to swim mazes and their time got faster and faster thus proving they have good memories
Most believe 2 or 3 seconds but it is proven that it is 3 months or so Look Up comet the gold fish Proves it is smart

I know as a fact (from a book) that a goldfish only has a three-second memory. So I never expect my goldfish to recognize me as their owner! =) Despite popular opinion that goldfish have no memory it has been show in many studies they do have long term memories. It is generally accepted be around two week but some studies have shown it to be up to 11 months.
Until they machure 3 months. 3 days, 17 hours, 43 minutes, and 6 seconds 3 months. 3 days, 17 hours, 43 minutes, and 6 seconds
NO! I did a science project on it. Not sure how long their memory is, but it is LONGER THAN A DAY, EVEN!
it is until they have sex then they forget everything.
60 seconds = 1 minute 60 minutes = 1 hour 24 hours = 1 day 30 days = 1 month 3 (months) x 30 (days) x 24 (hours) x 60 (minutes) x 60 (seconds) = 7,776,000 seconds 4 (hours) x 60 (minutes) x 60 (seconds) = 14,400 seconds 7,776,000 (the 3 months) + 14,400 (the 4 hours) = 7,790,400 seconds
Cats have good long-term memory and can remember their owners even after 3 months of separation.
