No, when they molt their underground, so they get out of their shell, molt, get back in their shell and eat the exoskeleton. You have to let them eat it because it has the nutrients it needs.
An exoskelton is the layer on the hermit crabs actual body that they shed when they outgrow it. (similar as how a snake sheds their skin) A shell is that which the hermit crab takes as a home that normally if from snails.
The hard shell of a lobster is known as the chitin.
Hermit crabs can. It happens when the hermit crab is changing its shell and falls over or when the hermit crab is dead it slides out or falls out of its shell! Sadly they can't always get back in there shells and die.
a shell
Hermit crabs need a shell because inside of the their shell is their soft tail or body. It needs it's shell because other hermit crabs can hurt or damage their tail or body that's inside of the shell. Hermit crabs will always be in a shell. The only time when they aren't in a shell is that quick few seconds when they change shells into a bigger one to grow. If your hermit crab is running around without it's shells there is something wrong with your crab. Go to the Mall of America (Nickaloden Universe) what ever you want to call it and ask the person why. I bet he can help you.

some crabs, like hermit crabs
What I know of that is hermit crabs will eat snails. However, hermit crabs will often use an empty shell of a sea snail.
The house of a hermit crab is called a shell. Unlike many other crabs that have a hard exoskeleton, hermit crabs use empty shells from other mollusks, such as snails, to protect their soft bodies. As they grow, they often switch to larger shells to accommodate their size.
They aren't; they need a shell.
