Hermit Crabs do shed there skin (when they molt) - which is when you have to pay VERY close attention. You can tell when they're molting because they eat extra, dig holes alot more and sleep most of the day and night.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hermit Crabs look like they die and fell out of thier shell. The skin they left behind looks just like them but they only grew out of thier old skin and are still growing like a snake, cicada, or anything else that sheds and leaves skin or a shell behind. So don't worry. I found one my first time having one. It looked like it was transfering into a new shell. It was in there for a while so when i picked it up the skin fell off and when i thought it died I almost threw the shell away but I looked in the shell and the crab was in the shell still. So thats when i looked up this question. When hermit crabs actually die they look like a shrimp with their tail but when they molt they don't shed all the way to their tail, only half way. HOPE THIS HELPED.
