Any ammonia is BAD. Your filter is not working well enough. To keep thing safe you will need to be doing some extra water changes (maybe daily) until the filter is working efficiently.

Ammonia should be kept at 0ppm at all time. It is toxic and leave permanent damage to the fish even if the fish survive it. Either your tank has not been cycled properly or the nitrogen cycle has crashed, or you have not cycled your tank at all. You need increase the partial water change to minimize the damage.

Fish tank water smelly?

If a tank smells bad then you're doing something wrong! A healthy established tank never smells. It is probably heaped full of ammonia from fish waste and uneaten food, ammonia kills fish as well as really stinking! If your tank smells rotten then it's your fault and you need to step up your routine tank maintenance.

Can cotton fin fungus affect other fish in the tank?

Fungus is not an infectious disease. What you have is a "bad water" problem possibly combined with a bit of fin nipping if the fungus is forming only on the fins of one or two fish. I guess your tank may be overstocked or the filter is not doing its job properly or you are not doing sufficient water changes. My advice is for you to do some water changes and also check the ammonia and nitrite levels in the tank. Then act appropriately by fixing whatever is causing the problem. Basic fish keeping rules are 1 inch of fish need a minimum of 1 gallon of water. Every occupied fish tank needs a cycled filter and at least 50% of a tanks water should be replaced weekly.

Miss out on any of them, and I can guarantee that your fish will have constant health problems.

Is all-purpose household ammonia safe to cycle an aquarium with?

Yes, but BE CAREFUL when you get it--it must be "unscented" ammonia, which is hard to find some places. Some people are saying, "huh?" The questioner is asking about the "nitrogen cycle" of an aquarium. Fish pee has ammonia in it, like all pee does. (Yes, fish pee.) Bacteria in the tank will turn the ammonia into nitrite, which is less harmful to the fish than ammonia but still bad, and other ammonia turn nitrite to nitrate which is harmless. (And then, if you have a lot of plants, the nitrate will fertilize them.) There are better instructions on the internet, but the basics follow: You need to get an ammonia indicating card, some bottles of Cycle, which is a concentrated source of nitrifying bacteria, some unscented Parson's Ammonia, and an eyedropper. If you can't get any Cycle, go to a really good fish store and buy a bag of their water, which has bacteria in it. Pour the Cycle, or the fish store water, in the tank and add just enough ammonia to turn the indicator in the middle of the card dark. Then let the filters run. Keep doing this until the indicator shows "no ammonia" after eight hours. When it does that, you've got a nice colony of bacteria built up. At this point, change 90 percent of the water and add a couple of the least expensive fish you're going to keep.

What could have caused tropical fish to die after putting them in a tank after only 24hours?

More information is needed to give you a educated guess as to what caused your fish to die after only 24 hours. You need to test your water for the following, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, PH, alkalinity, and chlorine. Is this a new or established tank? If new, did you condition the water with a dechlorinator? What was your water temperature? How did you acclimate your purchased fish to your tank water? Here is the best way to acclimate new fish to your tank, I've used this method for over 25 years and NEVER lost a new fish within the first few months of purchase. Get a good clean container at least twice the size of the amount of water in your bag with fish. Make sure there is no soap or other types of residue in this container, carefully empty the bag of water and fish into this container. For the next hour, every ten minutes, slowly add a small amount of water from your tank to this container. After the hour is up you should have at least twice the amount of water in this container and you can safely net the fish out and place them in your tank. Throw the water in this container away, you don't know what you might introduce into your tank with this water, bad enough the fish will have whatever's in the water on their bodies.

Why is my Cory cat jumping very high for no reason?

Your water may have a high concentration of Ammonia or Nitrite. I would check it and if necessary do a water change. If you follow the basic rules of sucessfull fishkeeping which are. (:- 1 inch of fish must have at least 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank must have a permanently running 'cycled' filter. :- Every tank must have at least 50% of its water replaced every week.) these 'bad water' things should not happen.

Why is your goldfish at the bottom of the tank all the time?

Maybe your tank is not properly filtered and its water is bad. Are you following the basic rules of fishkeeping. " 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. (A goldfish is a 10 inch fish) Every tank must have a permanently running 'cycled' filter. Every tank must have at least 50% of its water replaced every week.

How do you cure your goldfish from black spots you left them at your cousin's house for a week and then when i came back they had black spots I cleaned the tanl but don't know what to do?

In all probability the presence of the black spots indicates that the fish is on the mend after being damaged by being kept in bad water full of Ammonia. Your clean water and regular water changes should fix it up. There are some basic rules for keeping all species of fish. They are. :- 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. (Goldfish are 10 inch fish) :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. (This turns Ammonia into Nitrate biologically). :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week. (This keeps the Nitrate levels under control). If you keep to all the above rules your fish should do OK. If you don't I can guarantee that your fish will constantly be getting sick and they will have a shortened lifespan.
