Hermit crabs are very picky and have a number of criteria for what new shell they want to enter. It is nearly impossible to get a crab to leave their shell without traumatizing it or injuring it. You can improve the odds that it will change shells but offering clean shells of the appropriate size face up and filled with water. Changing the decorations in the tank will also trigger shell shopping behavior.
hermit crabs should not be put with other animals and your hermit crab needs a better home. Glad i could help p.s 35cm wide tanks can hold 3 hermit crabs
A hermit crab is very vulnerable without the snail shell, so you can expect it to get eaten, (or dry up for land hermit crabs), or injured before too long. Some species of hermit crabs actually don't use snail shells at all, however.
Yes they are scavengers. When you get a hermit crab at a pet shop, they order them from the beach or wild. Since they can't really find food that you feed them in your home, they get used to eating just about anything. That is why you don't get hermit crabs with painted shells because they are scavengers and they will eat anything.Even the paint chips that fall off of their shells.Trust me, I have 5 hermit crabs and I am getting 4 more this weekend so I will have 9.Go to thecrabisland.com for more information and i am happy to help. My name: Nashville T.
Hermit crabs breathe with modified gills. Tap water contains chlorine (unless it is well water) which will burn their gills and cause them great pain, as well as damaging them and eventually killing them if they continue to be exposed to it. they are not water crabs, they are land hermit crabs as the name states. You should not put them in the bathtub. you should be providing them with dechlorinated fresh water, or distilled water, and any tap water should be treated with a dechlorinator/heavy metal neutralizer. They should also have some ocean salt water from an ocean mix that is meant for salt water aquariums. This can be purchased in the aquarium section of your pet store. Hermit crab salt is not suitable, as it contains no salinity despite the name. Ocean salt provides necessary nutrients and salts that many species of hermit crabs require, and all require it to help with the molting process. They should have deep enough water dishes that they can submerge and fill their shells with water as they need. The kind of hermit crabs most people think of are Land Hermit Crabs. They live on land, and need at least enough water to submerge themselves. Land Hermit Crabs do need sea salt to keep their body chemistry balanced, and as such, need access to both salt and fresh water. Marine Hermit Crabs require a full saltwater aquarium to survive. Such tanks are elaborate, and should be researched thoroughly before purchase. Saltwater pets of all sorts are often regarded as difficult to care for.
Yes, hermit crabs can drown. But it is still very important to have distilled water in the tank for your hermit crab to drink. Putting a natural sponge can help hermit crabs from drowning. Also do not put enough water in the bowl for it to drown. Hermit crabs also need SEA salt water for them to bathe in to get their exoskeleton stronger. Hermit crabs need distilled water because the clorine burs their modified (hardened) gills, the gills are not the kind fish have. Hermies gills need moisture in the air. so have the tank have 70 - 80% humidity.
Hermit crabs dig holes for several reasons. They will dig down under the substrate to help regulate their body temperature as they are cold blooded animals and depend on their environment to help them regulate. Without a temperature variance so that they can cool down or warm up when they need to, eventually the hermit crabs will sicken and die. In captivity, they will often dig holes and stay under the surface for upwards of two weeks as they need to de-stress from the awful experience they have just had of being harvested, thrown into a bag with hundreds of other crabs, thrown into a container and shipped to a pet store where conditions most likely were not ideal or healthy for hermit crabs (lacking humidity or warm temperatures and even water). They are extremely stressed after this and can easily die as a result, and should therefore not be handled or disturbed, other than changing food and waters (ocean salt water and dechlorinated fresh), for the first two weeks after they come to your home. When it is close to time for the crab to molt, he may also begin exhibiting digging behavior. He may dig down and stay down for several days, but when it is time for him to molt he may stay under the substrate for several weeks to several months. You should never, ever dig up a buried crab. As they could very well be molting, digging up your crab during this delicate time can kill him. Some crabs will just dig because they appear to be bored. Equadorian hermit crabs are quite active, and will dig for what seems to be "just for fun". Purple Pincer hermit crabs are more sedate, and usually when they dig it is to destress or to molt.
Hermit crabs need a shell because inside of the their shell is their soft tail or body. It needs it's shell because other hermit crabs can hurt or damage their tail or body that's inside of the shell. Hermit crabs will always be in a shell. The only time when they aren't in a shell is that quick few seconds when they change shells into a bigger one to grow. If your hermit crab is running around without it's shells there is something wrong with your crab. Go to the Mall of America (Nickaloden Universe) what ever you want to call it and ask the person why. I bet he can help you.
Yes, hermit crabs have two pairs of antennae one for tasting and the other for smelling since hermit crabs don't have noses. The hermit crabs uses the long set of antennae for finding food, and the small short pair for tasting and eating.
Their hard shells help protect them from predators.
Pet hermit crabs in captivity eat lots of things like... Meats (cooked) Fruits(mostly bright like corn or carrots) Veggies Dairy(only feed them dairy after they molt to help them gain calsium) Hermit crab food Hope this helped you!
Most hermit crabs cannot live under water, they can drown, mould or both! Unless you know what exact type of hermit crab I would NOT take any chances on account of most don't! I hope this help, good luck!
