What are glowfish?

As far as I know glowfish are very very closely related to Zebra Danio (Brachydanio Rerio) which are omnivorous. Mine will happily eat topical fish flake food, freeze dried small shrimp that have been broken or crushed down to a size they can handle, algae pellets, and they seem to eat bits of algae off of my plants although this may just be them nipping at the plants themselves. They seem to eat as long as there is food to be eaten, and while they rush to the top of the tank when I put flakes or shrimp in, they will eventually start grazing on the food that has dropped to the bottom. They are not cleaner fish. They just eat till there is nothing left to eat. This is a note and a bit of a warning. I brought home an algae eater, and dropped an algae pellet in the tank for it which it basically ignored. That wasn't unexpected. The next day I check on my fish, and I have fat glowfish. Obviously bulgingly fat glowfish had been eating the algae pellet. They will eat as much as you give them to eat so be careful not to overfeed them. A good example I read was to try to think of the size of the fish's stomach and not feed them more than that twice a day, but that theory needs some refining. Use reason.

The Glofish Species and their Place in Your Tank

Glofish, are species of the danio fish family. Glofish usually swim in schools. Though make sure when you are giving a home to glofish that they have a tank of about eight gallons or more. Glofish are good community fish, especially when placed with other schooling fish. Do not place these particular fish with big fish, as they might be eaten or die of stress. When trying to put glofish into schools make sure you have over four fish. If you don't they may become aggressive and chase the other glofish who might become overwhelmed or sickly do to Mal nutrition and possibly nipped fins. make sure you have a freshwater aquarium set up for them.

Feeding, and the Right Tank for You and your Fish

Glofish tend to be aggressive when it comes to food time. So make sure you have plenty food in store for these little guys! Flakes are fine, though you should try to feed them blood worms or even other species of fry once a week. Feeding is only needed three times a week including their special treat day. This is the correct amount to give them because first of all a glofish has a stomach the size of his eye so the fish could easily become bloated, which there for creates more PH and ammonia in the water. Glofish in my experience eat off food that falls to the ground of the aquarium, which means no more leftovers. Though before you can even feed your fish there has to be a tank for them! As I mentioned a eight gallon nano tank will be fine, but more is always better when it comes to talking about fish. You see any wild fish grows up in the sea or river, so naturally fish would have all the space in the world to go about their business! But, when you are buying a fish from your local store, it was probably commercially bred. That means the fish may be used to a small water supply. OK back to talking about glofish! The tank you choose should be well planted as glofish just like any fish will find at home, live plants will work the best keeping in mind that the tank must be freshwater. Cloth plants will do fine but try not to include the artificial plastic kind.That plastic has oil in it that can be harmful to your new pet. Nooks and crannies for the pet to hide in would be perfect! Fake coral gives tour tank a natural feeling for your fish and your self. I used a conch shell that i found at the beach, and put it in to the aquarium. Make sure if you do that, to clean it out thoroughly before placing it in. The substrate or ground should be small stones or sand. Stones work the best since glofish live in fresh not salt water. Again try to stay away from the artificial colored gravel which also may contain harmful chemicals that may affect your fish! Fill a jug with water, add a stress coat, ammonia,pH, and nitrite conditioner to ready the water for your fish. Stir the cleanser into the non hard water and pour the mixture into your tank. Make sure you have a filter in place! If you are adding the glofish into your tank have a professional test your water at a fish store nearby to make sure your water is in good condition. Add to the aquarium anything that did not apply to your tank above and relax with your new pets. Make sure when you add your glofish to your tank that you set the container to float above the water for thirty minutes, add some of your tank water to the dealers water, wait another thirty minutes and scoop out your fish with a net, making sure none of the water contained goes into your own.

A Glofish and it's Looks and Temperament

As you might have guessed Glofish are very small. At their full grown age they can reach up to one inch! Now that's tiny! Imagine how tiny the fry would be! That is why Glofish do not do well without a school. Big fish would eat them in an instant if it wasn't for their family! When at the store you should never buy something (especially a living creature) just by how much it's look appeals to you. One word, research. I have had some bad experiences with getting fish without researching before hand. Glofish named after their intense neon colors practically glow in the dark! They can come in a bright yellowish green, hot pink, and a very eye catching orange. Glofish have great personality's but are probably the fastest fish I have ever owned. Glofish only do well completely on their own with other small fish, or with a large school. Having four or less can provide you with fish competing to be called head of the pack. That also means trouble when it comes to mating time. Glofish are very curious fish and love to swim out in the open. Though still make sure you have plants and all the other necessity's available to them. Now that your done reading and have everything ready, go out and get yourself a glofish!
