How do car clutches work?

On the back of the engine, bolted to the crankshaft is a flywheel. It serves three (3) purposes, one is to balance the engine, it is heavy and keeps the engine turning smoothly. Another is the gear cogs are what starter engages to start car. Third is It turns all the time when engine is running. Bolted to flywheel is a 'pressure plate' and between pressure plate and flywheel is the clutch disc. The pressure plate is spring loaded, keeping the disc firmly pressed on the flywheel. The transmission shaft, with splines goes in to the splines in center of disc and friction of disc on flywheel, from springs on pressure plate turns the transmission shaft, providing power to transmission. When you push clutch pedal, a 'throwout bearing' presses on the springs on pressure plate, (the springs are not coil springs, they are flat 'leaf' type) that when the throwout bearing pushes on them, it releases the friction and disc stops it's revolutions or spinning, therefor disengaging the flywheel, in turn engine, from transmission.

Why section of flywheel arm is eliptical?

The forces coming on the arms of flywheel are tangential to the flywheel rotation.During the design of arms precaution is taken that arms are made with minimum material with required strength &with elliptical c/s we made arms stronger by keeping major axis of ellipse in parallel & minor axis perpendicular with direction of force so that large material is available in the direction of applied force. There for c/s of flywheel is elliptical.
