They are very sensitive and can only be kept with peaceful shoaling fish, such as tetras. No greedy fish, as Discus cannot tolerate bullying, ever. Discus are usually kept in a single species tank. As a retired Discus breeder I can assure you that Discus are as tough bold and bossy as any other Cichlid of a similar size. They are not shy and retiring, they are domineering and will take over a tank. To avoid bullying they need to be kept in groups/shoals of no less than 5 and probably 8 is better. The Minimum size tank for a Discus group/shoal is 72"x18"x24". The problem if you are new to fish keeping with Discus is that they MUST HAVE PERFECT WATER CONDITIONS to suit them, with very regular water changes of around 10% daily and 50% weekly. Temp must never go below 80F. pH around 6 and less than 20ppm GH/KH. is about right. Failure to keep Discus water within those right parameters will result in them getting sick and probably dying if the water is not fixed quickly. The only fish to keep with them however are others from the same kind of waters in the Amazon.
