The diet of the heron is fairly consistent across the heron species. That constancy consists largely of items upon which one might expect an omnivorous wading bird choosing to dine. Fish and frogs are mainstays, staples. To spice up their meals, and possibly their lives, various Ardeidae family members--the herons, egrets, the bitterns--occasionally also masticate on whatever chewy sea life wanders into their unfortunate way (crayfish, crabs, things of this nature). The more land-dwelling also chow down on insects; the less discriminating, perhaps, will eat a rabbit. But I do not like to think about it.
