there are 2 types of filters for salt water tanks. The most important and must-have filter is called a "protien skimmer" This removes nitraites from your system. Nitrates are basicly wasts' from fish and other organisms. The 2nd type of filter is a hexametaphosphate crystal filter.tis filters and maintains phosphates in your system. Phosphates are chemicals such as heavy metals (iron, alkaline, magnesium, ect...). Any inorganic chemicals are concidered phosphates. Unlike nitraites, phosphates are good for your tank but a specific amounts( alkaline-8.1 Magnesium-1.2 calcium-3.6 iodine-2.5) but too high and it is not good.if you have a reef only tank with no fish you wont have to purchase a hexametaphosphate crystal filter. Instead just add trace chemicals directly into tank

It depends on what your trying to accomplish, what your going to be keeping in it, as well as the material of the tank itself. Glass or Acrylic. You can have a Fish Only system, FOWLER system, or a REEF system. Water Flow Lighting Protein Skimmer Berlin Style Open Sump Large amounts of live rock (1 - 5 pound/ Gallon) FOWLER (Fish Only With Live Rock) Is cheaper and will run about $1,500 for a 55 gallon Set up. Use ½ - 1½ pound live rock/ gallon Fish Only, can go many ways, you can have a cheap hang on back filter or canister filter (Not recommended) or a below the aquarium Wet/Dry filter (Best Option). For a 55 Gallon set up maybe around $600 -$800 without a protein skimmer, though it is BEST if you do get one.

How long does it take to set up a saltwater aquarium?

A saltwater aquarium usually takes about a month to cycle if done properly. Once the tank is cycled you slowly add fish and coral making sure to not overload the bio-load and shock the system. A saltwater system is considered to be a seasoned aquarium after 1 year, and by then is usually considered a gorgeous reef tank.

Is it ok to put a betta fish in a tank with a filter?

You Bet!!! Seriously, the more space you give them the better off they are. The most beautiful (fresh water) aquarium I ever had was a 20 gallon heavily planted tank that housed four females. It had a regular, over the back, filter system. It was gorgeous, and the fish took full advantage of all the space.

What are requirements needed for saltwater fish?

To keep saltwater fish, you should have a fairly large aquarium, preferably with a canister or trickle filter(for fish only). You need marine aquarium salt and a hydrometers (salt measurer). You will also need marine substrate (gravel) made from aragonite (crushed coral), and not a gravel designed for freshwater. Depending on your water source, you may also need a water purification system, and of course you will need a heater.
