The Latin name derives from the Greek (carcharias, sharp tooth) but is not pronounced with an SH sound. The closest cognate is the Yucatec name "xoc" which does sound like shock or shark. In any event, the English word "shark" gained popularity following the display of a large shark by Captain John Hawkins in 1565.
