Why do goldfish lay on their backs?

Your fish is struggling, and probably near the end of its life, if you have not already discovered that. There is an outside chance that something from the pet supply store could help your fish, but I would not put a lot of hope in that possibility.

The fish has been exposed to terriby poluted water containing Ammonia and Nitrite. This has caused an internal bacterial infection. The fish should be euthanased (Put out of its misery) as it is dieing in agony and slowly. Then, before you decide to get another fish, read and observe the following. The basic rules for keeping fish successfully are. :- 1 inch of fish must have at least 1 gallon of water. Every tank must have a permanently running 'cycled' filter. :- Every tank need at least 50% of its water relpaced every week. If you fail to observe and comply with any of the above rules I can guarantee that your fish will be constantly getting sick and they will live vastly shortened lifespans.

Well, if you see a fish upside down, it usually means that it's dead. I only have 1 other cause: it could have just gotten there by accident. If it has trouble getting right side up again, help it by just taking the goldfish out, turning it right side up again and putting back in the water.
