A black light configuration is completely safe for your fish. It's more recommended for aquascaped fully-planted aquariums, as it prevents algae blooms. If you do decide to use black light, make sure you have plenty of decorations that react to it, otherwise you won't have much use for it. I have a 45 gal. tank set up with a black light for night time, and a fluorescent for the day. It's cool to have less light coming from the tank, and when you stumble out to use the restroom in the middle of the night, and all you see is glowing fake anemones or plastic plants, its pretty awesome. =]
Good luck, and happy aquascaping.

Yes, black algae can be harmful to fish and their overall health. It can compete with fish for oxygen and nutrients, leading to stress and potential health issues. Additionally, black algae can create a less hospitable environment for fish by reducing water quality and oxygen levels.

Fish that produce their own light are called bioluminescent fish. They have special light-producing organs filled with light-emitting bacteria that allow them to create their own light. This adaptation helps them communicate, camouflage, attract prey, or distract predators in the dark depths of the ocean.
Yes, black algae in a fish tank can be harmful to the fish and the overall tank environment. It can compete with plants for nutrients, block light, and release toxins that can negatively impact water quality and the health of the fish. Regular maintenance and cleaning are important to prevent the growth of black algae in a fish tank.
