Around the world, with the availability of different foods locally, a number of different style of cooking and blending of ingredients has evolved.

1. Narrative Format - the recipe is written in paragraph form giving the ingredients with the method of combining them. It works well for short recipes.

2. Standard Format - Ingredient list is given first, in order of use in recipe. The ingredient list is followed with step-by-step instructions.

3. Active format - Provides step by step instructions with ingredients listed at each step.

There are three types of recipe, not four. These types are known as Standard, Active, and Narrative format. Standard format has the ingredients named first, then the directions. Active format has instructions telling you to do things while other stages of the recipe are happening. Narrative format calls for an essay-like narration of the recipe, like a story without the lists and often with a background or story of the recipe, so you have to read as you go to complete the recipe.
