In short, sometimes.

Magic mushrooms are illegal in the US. Some states will charge you with a felony if convicted, in others it may only be a misdemeanor. Since magic mushrooms grow everywhere in America, police will not arrest you for having some growing in your front yard. So, even if the police are ABLE to identify the mushrooms as "magic," then they still cannot arrest you, unless of course you are growing the mushrooms inside your house or otherwise obviously in cultivation. But if you have shrooms that are dried, then you can get charged with possession of an illegal drug, and large amounts could mean 'intent to sell'.

There have been different case law scenarios where some states have proven them legal and others not so much. In some cases such as in Florida supreme court it was found that magic mushrooms are considered a 'container' of psilocybin unless clearly specified in federal law as such. Since they are not, then possession of magic mushrooms is legal. In other states this same principle has not held up in case laws. Either way mushroom spores are legal to buy from a variety of vendors online. The only exception is with the states of GA, ID, and IL where the states have passed laws restricting their sale.

Mushrooms are no longer legal in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. The Dutch government banned Magic mushrooms in December 2008. Despite this ban some smart shops still sell dried mushrooms. If you are in possession of a small amount the police will not fine you. They will give you a warning or/and take you're drugs.

A good and upcoming alternative is the magic truffle, it's the little brother of the mushroom. These truffles are soled in most smart shops (and sometimes shady souvenirs shops with lousy information and bad products)

The effects of the truffles are almost the same as mushrooms (but the taste is slightly different but still a bit funny)

Hence Magic Mushrooms in Amsterdam are illegal but Magic truffles are legal.

Sorry original poster, but they are not as they Schedule I substances under the United States Controlled Substances Act of 1970 (Fed. Reg.). Regardless of what the State of Florida may say Federal law overrules State law EVERY time.

this is someone else improveing the answer above. the question asked was "Are magic mushroom spores legal in iowa" this question has to be refined and filtered down. "Magic Mushroom" is a very loose term, it could refer to a multitude of diffrent hallucinogenic mushrooms, these range in hallucinogenic or a more correctly used term psycoactive chemicals. Now i am not 100% sure on the chemicals contained in mushrooms such as Amanitas but i am 100% sure on mushrooms containing psilocybin and psilocin, such as cubensis which are one of the most used commonly used mushrooms.

Psilocybin and Psilocin are Schedule I drugs which means that the acuall mushroom that has been grown to at least the mycelium stage is illegal, in some states the act of inoculating a jar with spores of a psilocybin and psilocin containing mushroom is illegal as long as the grower knew before hand the the spores came from a mushroom containing psilocybin and psilocin. these laws can be very tricky because they have to prove the prior knowledge.

Here is where the answer above is incorrect, although mushrooms are illegal in all states.
