The parasite Toxoplasma gondii, can only reproduce in the guts of cats. The larvae infect the brains of rats, affecting the regions controlling fear, causing the rats to become fearless. They thus get eaten by cats and the cycle starts again.

Humans can also become infected by this same parasite, and in some areas nearly the entire population is infected. Scientists are studying whether there are any significant differences in these populations than others regarding personality disorder rates among other things. Those infected appear to be more reckless. It's been theorized that the parasite originally infected humans during cave man days and controlled their brains in the same way, so that we could be eaten by large predator cats (so that they can reproduce in their guts).

It makes one wonder how much we still don't know. It's possible this and maybe other parasites have infected us and changed and controlled our behavior for possibly millenia. There are fungi that infect ants and control their brains ... causing them to go to the nest where they infect other ants. There are also parasites that infect caterpillars brains and control them like puppets. Nature is awesome and sometimes very scary.
