They're really very different animals and it depends on what sort of pet you're looking for.
I would recommend a hamster for most people because ferrets are a lot of work if you want to care for them properly. Hamsters can be quite happy in a cage but ferrets are much more active and really need about as much space as a Jack Russell.
I think that hamsters make poor pets as they are nocturnal and sleep during the day. They can be quite noisy at night. For me, it would be ferrets every time (but expect to give just as much attenetion as you would a dog). Nosniboro
