Not without starting a fight.
A chicken will cluck and a rooster will crow. The sound made by a rooster is often louder and more distinct than the sound made by a chicken.
A rooster can crow multiple times a day, typically starting at dawn, but it may also crow throughout the day in response to various stimuli such as noise, movement, or other roosters. On average, a rooster may crow anywhere from 10 to 20 times in a day, although this can vary significantly based on the individual rooster and its environment. Some roosters are more vocal than others, leading to a wide range in crowing frequency.
Hens "talk" a lot more than roosters, but are not particularly loud. The rooster "crows" once in a while and can be quite loud.
Roosters generally crow to protect the flock. While some individual roosters may crow less than others, there is no specific breed that is quieter.
The rooster could be ill, it could be the wrong season ( crowing is part of setting up territories and calling females into his group, if it is not breeding season his male hormones will drop and he will have no desire to crow) Or He could be a beta rooster - if there is more than one rooster on the property at least one will always be alpha doing most of the crowing, others down the pecking order may just stay quiet, accepting that they are not at the top of the pecking order.
Roosters crow incessantly mainly to establish their territory, communicate with other roosters, and alert the flock of potential danger. It is a natural behavior for them to assert their dominance and protect their hens.
It really would depend on the size of the rooster. Spurs will grow to a certain length and then start to curl. They will curl more than once but it is hard on the bird. Walking becomes difficult. Trimming spurs is not that hard.
It is preferred to have one rooster for every 5 to 6 hens
The rooster crowed at midnight.....a popular beginning to those early mystery books. Well, a rooster can and does crow at midnight. They crow when they see light. They can see light much better than humans which is why if you hear a rooster crowing at 5 am and it is still dark, he sees the sun rising. If he has a window in his coop he will crow when a car passes by and the headlights shine in his coop. To change the time your bird crows you must make sure all light is blocked from the interior of his roosting area.
A peer is more persuasive than an authority figure.
Some breeds, known as sex links, can be sexed at birth however the methods vary depending on the breed. Generally speaking, the combs of the roosters will be larger than that of hens of the same breed. By the time a rooster is about 4-6 months old you should hear them crow, which is the one way to tell for sure as hen don't crow.
A good ratio is 1 rooster for every 15 hens. Many farms keep more hens than that and only one rooster, but that keeps him very busy.
