I've been welding for about 8 months. I was told that eventually welding flash would happen after many hours of continuous welding.

It gives you the feeling of having fine pieces of grit under your eye lids, your eyes become very sensitive to light and it hurts when you blink. I tried washing my eyes out with water, but it only made matter worse.

I sliced a potato and then placed one 1/4 inche slices on the outside of both eyes - secured by a small ace bandage. I left them in place while I slept (about five hours). When I removed the potato's my eyes where back to normal.

The potato thing really works. Although I slept through the process it was recommended that you leave the potato's in place for at least and hour.

It depends on what you are welding. If you are doing welding on mild steel go with MIG welding; if it is aluminum or stainless steel then use TIG welding. TIG welding gives a nice looking finish. If you just want to get a decent look, then MIG is preferable and easy.
