If it's a juvenile (baby) under 4-5 inches and alone, then yes, it could survive a short while in a 5 gallon tank - BUT, as a responsible pet owner, you should plan for the full adult size of that breed, which is around 12 inches long, which means it would require 12+ gallons all by itself. If you want tank mates, then plan about 1 + gallon per square inch of fish of the adult size of any fish added on average. Bichir are also predatory and will eat smaller fish, so if it can fit in it's mouth, don't put in it the tank with it. Otherwise, they are a delightful and unique (not to mention smart) fish.
