It is to store their food. Well in the dessert they have to scurry from hungry animals, And they aren't big enough to carry their food in their hands, they can't just spend 15 min outside in the dessert with hungry animals smelling them. They gotta grab their goods and scurry back to their hiding spot under ground where their safe, ;) that's why, it's their way of conserving food
No because the mother hamster is taking the baby hamsters to a safer place.
That's completely normal. Also, they don't hide all of it. The hamsters put some of the food in their cheek pouches (hamsters have little pouches in their cheeks that the hamsters like to store food in for later, and they spew it back out later to eat). The stuff that the hamsters hide is food storage. Usually the hamster will just pick one corner and put it all there, but sometimes the hamsters will use the whole cage area to hide it in.
I don't really know how much food they can put in their cheek pouches, but i do know that they can hold up to 20 pounds of food.
It's not their actual shoulders puffing up, it is their food pouches! Hamsters store food in these pouches, also known as their cheeks. They will save food for later, and when their pouches are full it almost makes it look like their shoulders are puffy!
Hamsters have pouches to keep food in them. Also if they want to move there bedding around the cage, they will put saw dust or bedding in there mouths and will arrange the cage how they like, this is a good thing because you will no when they are settled because they will stop moving all there bedding/ sawdust around. :-)
No, because they've known each other ever since they were babies.
You put a male and a female together. Take the male out after a few hours, and your female will have babies.
Do not put the male around the female! Some male hamsters eat the babies, I'm not kidding.
Dont disturb her....leave her be. when she had her babies she will nurse them and take care of them. Also if its her first time she might eat the babies because she has no expierence and in the second time she will know what to do. so dont worry if she eats her babies because she might get pregnant again and she wont eat her babies.
hamsters will sometimes eat their babies so therefore it would be safer for the young until they have grown more.
never ever put syrian or dwarf hamsters cannot be put together because they fight but boys and girls do not (but they have babies obviously!) they fight and it can lead to death!!! :(so dont do it!!! Edit: Actually, male and female hamsters will also fight in between mating and the male will eat the babies or stress out the mother so much that she will eat them. Hamsters are solitary creatures by nature and so it is best to keep them apart once they aren't babies anymore.
You are supposed to put him in a cage next to the female and babies but not with them. I have bred hamsters and have made that mistake.
