I have taken an researched "magic mushrooms" some and this is what I know. They are generally benign, although different types do have some toxins. There are many types of mushrooms that make you high, most of them are pscilocibe or pcilosibin types. Some can be hard on your liver (probably similar to the effect of alcohol in larger doses). All and all there are not really any documented cases of serious health problems from occasional mushroom use. As far as how you feel and how the trip is: It takes having a hardend stomach to smallow them sometimes but it is generally just a dirt taste. It takes about 20 minutes to an hour to start feeling it, which at first feels like butterflies in your stomach for a half hour or so. Then some lighter feelings and euphoria, often accompanied by laughter and sillyness. Now these are the effects after a gram or two, more than that can be hard to handle for most people and isn't recommended even after several experiences.
