For example, there is a place along the Fraser River in British Columbia called Hell's Gate. There, in 1914, the channel was accidentally narrowed by careless blasting on the canyon walls. That made the water so swift that the salmon population in that area crashed because most of the fish didn't have the stamina to make it up the faster current. In an attempt to restore the population, shelters were constructed along the banks, called "fishways". The current is slowed down in those shelters, giving the salmon a chance to rest and regain their strength.
