Acidic liquids, like wine, will absorb lead from leaded crystal. However, the process is so slow that you shouldn't worry about sipping a glass of wine over an hour or two or serving from a decanter that you filled with wine that very night.

The real danger occurs when you store beverages in lead crystal decanters for long periods of time (I'm rather sure it takes at least days, but potentially longer, for lead levels to reach a dangerous amount). The simple rule of thumb is to add the beverage to the decanter on the day you plan to use it, and never leave any leftover liquid in the decanter for storage.

Lead is bad for anyone, but kids are especially affected by it. All the recommendations I've read say to be extra safe and simply avoid letting kids drink anything from lead crystal.

It is well known that lead, as well as other other heavy metal elements, can pose a hazard in the long term for humans. Do swarovski crystals contain lead?

AnswermaybeNo. All crystal does not contain lead. There was a time that the increased lead content was considered a good thing, making it heavier and giving it a more substantial "heft" when you picked it up. It was a selling point and commanded a higher price. Now, however, it has been determined that the lead can leach into the liquid inside, like in a wine decanter that is filled with wine and sits quite a while. And, of course, lead in the blood stream causes many horrific symptoms and contact should be eliminated or at least reduced as much as possible. There are crystal products that have no lead, though.

Is shannon crystal safe for everyday use because of the lead?

No lead crystal is safe to drink/dispense from. All leaded crystal leaches lead into any beverage contained therein. Acidic beverages pull lead from crystal faster than other liquids. Even very small amounts of lead are unsafe for consumption and can cause brain damage.
