Their general family group can usually be identified easily by their overall body and fin shapes and sizes. To define the species and subspecies (if any) requires some expertise. Colouring can be taken into consideration as is scale type, shape and counts. Ray counts on the fins are also done as is comparison of gill plates and rakers if any. In some species the only way to verify their species is to perform a DNA test.
