There are many ways. Bubble nests say they are happy in there current environment. they will swim around to get your attention and will respond to your voice.
Simple observation is the only way to tell. Bettas are just like all other fish. If they are given proper conditions they should be OK. Proper conditions for a Betta are :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. (Bettas are slightly more than a 2 inch fish) Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- every tank need to have at least 50% of its water changed every week.. Observe those rules and your Betta will be happy if you also feed him at least 2 times daily.

Well, if you love your Betta fish, then it should live by itself. But if you add another Betta to your current Betta fish's tank, then they will start a fight because Betta Fish are Siamese fighting fish and if one Betta is in contact of another Betta, the possible reason would be a fight between them two.
A betta is a fish of the species Betta, especially Betta splendens, commonly known as the Siamese fighting fish.
You would surely be aware if Bettas have been spawing in your tank. If they have, and nothing else has been spawning in there, then in all probablility the tiny fish you can see will be Betta.
